GARAN labels for EU durability guarantees

GARAN labels are harmonised EU labels that inform consumers about a commercial guarantee of durability offered by a manufacturer. Since 27 September 2026, the GARAN label has been required in relevant cases where the manufacturer provides a commercial guarantee of durability free of charge, covering the entire product for more than two years.
At Comex, we provide professional GARAN label printing for manufacturers and businesses placing consumer products on the European Union market. We help you select suitable label materials, printing technologies, and application solutions according to your product, packaging, and production requirements.

⚠️ What is a GARAN label? ⚠️

The GARAN label is a standardised EU label designed to inform consumers about a manufacturer's commercial guarantee of durability.

Its purpose is to communicate the guarantee period, manufacturer's brand, and product model in a clear, consistent format. The harmonised design helps consumers throughout the European Union recognise products covered by an additional durability guarantee.

The EU rules introducing the GARAN label have applied since 27 September 2026. The label is distinct from a tamper-evident warranty seal and does not replace either the commercial guarantee statement or consumers' statutory rights.

The harmonised GARAN label applies where the manufacturer offers a commercial guarantee of durability that meets all three conditions:
‍
— It covers the entire product.
— It is provided by the manufacturer at no additional cost to the consumer.
— It lasts for more than two years.

Where these conditions are met and the manufacturer has provided the relevant information to the seller, the seller must display the harmonised label prominently.

Which manufacturers
need GARAN labels?

GARAN labels can be used across many industries producing durable consumer goods. Whether the label is required depends on the terms of the manufacturer's commercial guarantee of durability, rather than the product category alone.

Consumer electronics and electrical equipment manufacturers

GARAN labels may be used on computers, monitors, televisions, audio equipment, and other electronic devices covered by a qualifying manufacturer's durability guarantee. They provide a consistent way to communicate the guarantee period across the EU market.

Labels can be applied directly to a device or its packaging. Depending on the application surface, paper or film labels may be selected with adhesives suitable for plastic, metal, or cardboard.

Large and small household appliance manufacturers

GARAN labels are relevant to household appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, coffee machines, vacuum cleaners, and food processors where the qualifying durability guarantee conditions are met.

Depending on the application and handling requirements, labels can be printed on paper or film materials. Adhesion, print legibility, and label durability are important considerations during storage, transport, and product handling.

Tool, power tool, and workshop equipment manufacturers

GARAN labels may be used for drills, screwdrivers, saws, sanders, measuring devices, and other consumer tools covered by a qualifying manufacturer's durability guarantee.

For tools exposed to demanding operating conditions, applying the label to the retail packaging may be a practical solution. Where the label is attached directly to the equipment, the material and adhesive should be selected with potential exposure to moisture, dirt, and abrasion in mind.

Furniture and home
furnishing manufacturers

GARAN labels may be suitable for tables, chairs, desks, wardrobes, beds, and other home furnishings covered by a manufacturer's commercial guarantee of durability extending to the entire product.

The label may be applied to cardboard packaging or an appropriately selected product surface. When attaching labels directly to furniture, careful adhesive selection is particularly important to avoid damage to surface coatings and finishes.

Sports and recreational
equipment manufacturers

GARAN labels may be used for bicycles, fitness machines, exercise equipment, outdoor accessories, and other sports products covered by a qualifying manufacturer's durability guarantee.

These products may be exposed to varying conditions during use. For direct application, suitable self-adhesive film labels can provide increased resistance to moisture, abrasion, and temperature fluctuations, depending on the selected material.

Garden equipment and domestic machinery manufacturers

GARAN labels may be appropriate for lawnmowers, robotic mowers, grass trimmers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers, and other equipment used around the home and garden.

These products often face moisture, UV radiation, and changing temperatures. Durable film labels may therefore be considered for direct application, while suitable paper labels can be used for packaging.

Children's products and other durable consumer goods

GARAN labels may also be relevant to prams, selected children's furniture, suitcases, travel accessories, and other durable consumer products where the qualifying guarantee conditions are met.

For these products, label placement should take account of the product's construction, intended use, and safety requirements.

The minimum size of a printed GARAN label is 95 × 100 mm.

Printed GARAN labels may be produced in colour or black and white. The layout, proportions, typography, and fixed graphical elements must follow the official template. Only the specified fields, guarantee duration, manufacturer's brand or trademark, and product model identifier, may be customised.

Self-adhesive GARAN labels – materials and production

The choice of material depends on where the label will be applied and how long it needs to remain legible. GARAN labels may be attached directly to products or to their packaging. The material should be selected according to the application surface, handling conditions, and expected environmental exposure.

Paper GARAN labels
Self-adhesive paper labels are a practical option for packaging stored and handled under standard conditions. They offer clear print reproduction and may be suitable for larger production runs where no additional resistance to moisture or demanding environmental conditions is required.
‍
Film GARAN labels
Self-adhesive film labels can be selected for applications requiring greater resistance to moisture, abrasion, and other operating conditions. The final combination of film, adhesive, and printing method depends on the application surface and the expected service environment.

GARAN labels on rolls
GARAN labels supplied on rolls can simplify application during product packaging and labelling operations. Roll winding direction, core diameter, and label orientation can be selected to match the equipment used on the production line.
